Comparing "The Taming Of The Shrew" to "My Best Friend's Girl"
As taming of the shrew proves, the idea of romance and control in a relationship has been around for years. In "taming of the shrew" Petruchio, who's a demanding man, gets pay to tamed Katherine. In the 2008 movie "My Best Friend's Girl" Tank; a guy hired to take girls on horrible dates so they crawl back to the boyfriends they dumped, struggles with his libido and the meaning of friendship when his best pal needs his help with the girl who dumped him. At the end he ends up loving that girl and she loves him too.
Though Petruchio's and Tank's actions are similar they have some differences. In Taming of The Shrew Katherine is the only one who changed to make the relatinship work, But in the Movie Tank changed too.
The movie shows us that one of the things that hasn't change is the fact that men "get together" to discuss their relationship and how they will get what they want.Other thing that hasn't change is the fact that they could possibly pay someone to go out with a girl in other for them to get what they want. One og the things that has changed is that females have more power now in days, Females are not the only ones that have to changed themselves for a relationship to work, now in days men change too in order for the relationship to work.
Quote 1
PETRUCHIO
Come, come, you wasp. I' faith, you are too angry KATHERINE
If I be waspish, best beware my sting PETRUCHIO
My remedy is then to pluck it out KATHERINE
Ay, if the fool could find it where it lies. PETRUCHIO
Who knows not where a wasp does wear his sting?
In his tail. KATHERINE
In his tongue. KATHERINE
Yours, if you talk of tales. And so farewell.
What, with my tongue in your tail? Nay, come again,
Good Kate. I am a gentleman (act ii, scene i, line 222)
KATHERINE
Where did you study all this goodly speech? PETRUCHIO
It is extempore, from my mother wit KATHERINE
A witty mother! Witless else her son. PETRUCHIO
Am I not wise? KATHERINE
Yes, keep you warm
(act ii , scene i , line 278)
In this scene Tank goes to Alexis house after she called him at work. They start fighting
Tank: “I owned you an explanation, the reason why I didn’t sleep with you is because you are unattractive, there I said it!”
Alexis: “Thanks you so much because you saved me from what could have been possibly be the worst decision of my life, and I have eat Suchi in Tijuana”
Tank: “You are below my standards, even for a one night pity whore and I have taking down some real whores alexis”
Alexis: “Yeah whores, cows, cheeps I bet your sex life is a regular heavy pass” Tank: “You are what we call a two bagger. That means I wear a bag on my head, just in case the one in you breaks”
Alexis: “Are you sure is not just a size thing? ‘Cuz I bet it’s what’s in between your testicles”
Tank: “Well at least I can hide my shame in my pants. What really sucks is having the ass the size of a miniature Mediterranean donkey”
She slaps him 4 times they stare at each other and they kiss with passion. This scene is similar to the scene in the play where Katherine and Petruchio talk the only difference is that In the movie they end up kissing each other and in the play they go there different ways after the argument.
Quote 2
PETRUCHIO
That is, to watch her, as we watch these kitesThat bate and beat and will not be obedient. She ate no meat today, nor none shall eat.Last night she slept not, nor tonight she shall not.As with the meat, some undeservèd faultI’ll find about the making of the bed,And here I’ll fling the pillow, there the bolster,This way the coverlet, another way the sheets.Ay, and amid this hurly I intendThat all is done in reverend care of her. And, in conclusion, she shall watch all night,And if she chance to nod I’ll rail and brawl,And with the clamor keep her still awake. This is a way to kill a wife with kindness,And thus I’ll curb her mad and headstrong humor. He that knows better how to tame a shrew,Now let him speak; ’tis charity to shew
(Act ii, scene i, line 210)
In the movie Tank has a relationship with Alexis behind his best friend’s back. In “The Taming of The Shrew” Petruchio treated Katherine really bad behind her father’s back. Tank and Petruchio are not being totally honest. The difference between them is that Tank is falling in love with her that’s why he can’t be honest with his friend, while Petruchio can’t be honest with katherine’s father because he’s trying to get tamed Katherine not necessarily because he loves her.
Quote 3
PETRUCHIO
Sirrah Grumio, go to your mistress,
Say I command her to come to me KATHERINE
What is your will, sir, that you send for me? PETRUCHIO
Marry, peace it bodes, and love, and quiet life,
And awful rule, and right supremacy,
And, to be short, what not that’s sweet and happy? PETRUCHIO
Nay, I will win my wager better yet,
And show more sign of her obedience,
Her new-built virtue and obedience. Enter KATHERINE with BIANCA and WIDOW See where she comes and brings your froward wives
As prisoners to her womanly persuasion.—
Katherine, that cap of yours becomes you not.
Off with that bauble, throw it underfoot KATHERINE Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,
Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee
And craves no other tribute at thy hands
But love, fair looks and true obedience—
Too little payment for so great a debt.
Such duty as the subject owes the prince,
Even such a woman oweth to her husband.
And when she is froward, peevish, sullen, sour,
And not obedient to his honest will,
What is she but a foul contending rebel
And graceless traitor to her loving lord?
I am ashamed that women are so simple
To offer war where they should kneel for peace;
Or seek for rule, supremacy and sway
When they are bound to serve, love, and obey.
Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot,
And place your hands below your husband’s foot:
In token of which duty, if he please,
My hand is ready, may it do him ease. PETRUCHIO
Why, there’s a wench! Come on and kiss me, Kate. (to LUCENTIO)
Come, Kate, we’ll to bed.
We three are married, but you two are sped.
'Twas I won the wager, though you hit the white,
And, being a winner, God give you good night!
(act v, scene ii, line105) At the end of the movie tank changed his personality and his views of relationship, Unlike the play where the only one who had to change was Katherine. This proves that now unlike before men have to fight and win women’s love, were as before men could do whatever they want and women would be the one who had to obey their husband’s commands.
